"Do you know when you'll be speaking to Haim?" an inquiry pops up. "My request was to ask if I can become their extra sister."

"How often on tour that audience members told us and said, 'After your show, I bought a guitar'," says Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "It is the ultimate honour. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage young girls to form a group."

Award Recognition

The trio are speaking from their homes, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the nomination is deeply felt by the sisters.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant milestone," says Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the women that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The album emerged from a phase of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that odd liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The words follow departures and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in the moment who they want to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to consciously practice ignoring the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Style

That developed toughness required a different sonic direction – more raw and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Laughter

The trio's honesty shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their personal tales.

One man left Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Legacy

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an worldwide fan base.

But the band will forever be their primary commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was four," shares Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
